        What exactly Is Reflexology?

Reflexology is often described as compression or more accurately, pressure therapy of the feet. It is a natural and drugless way of bringing relief and healing to the body by utilising its own natural healing recourses.

Reflexology is based on the long established principle that there are energy zones that run throughout the body, and Reflexology in the feet relative to the zones and to each and every organ function and part of the body. Reflexology is a completely safe and drugless therapy that means the whole person.

Although the practice or Reflexology is seen by some to be a recent development. Its origins can be traced back several thousand years to the Ancient Egyptians and to China where it shares the same roots as acupuncture and where it is still widely practiced today. The Art of Reflexology was lost to the western world until the 1930's when it was introduced and refined by the American physiotherapist Eunice Ingham building on the earlier work of Dr William Fitzgerald and Dr Edwin Bowers in 'Zone therapy'. Over a lifetime of successful practice  Eunice Ingham developed the treatment techniques that form the basis of modern Reflexology. In the last 25 years Reflexology has made significant impact in the field of alternative therapies in the United Kingdom, largely through the pioneering work of Ann Gillanders one of the first British Reflexologists to train professionally and develop the techniques in this country. She now Lectures as Principal of the British School of Reflexology, and continues to practice extensively.

        How it works

Reflexology works through the nerve pathways of the body, creating a stimulating effect from the tips of the toes, through the nervous system, culminating in the brain. It relaxes tension, improves blood supply and nerve functions, and restores balance and equilibrium to the body's control systems. Reflexology conditions and stimulates the self healing, powers of the whole being, it is extremely effective in the relief of stress which is the root cause of many illnesses

Reflexology is used confidently in treating most common ailments. Is particularly effective in treating back and neck problems, and can provide enormous relief for those suffering from chronic conditions such as asthma, eczema, arthritis, digestive and bowel disorders, bronchial conditions, hormonal imbalance, premenstrual tension, post-natal depression, migraine, high blood pressure and many other problems. It can also be of great benefit to patients before and after hospitalisation, particularly as an aid to recovery for victims of heart attacks and strokes, and in post operative convalescence.

Reflexology is not however simply for those suffering from ailments or disorders it is an excellent preventative health measure.

75% of all illness is stress related, Reflexology reduces stress by generating deep, tranquil relaxation.

        Helping to Prevent Illness

Preventive health care is becoming more and  more important as we realise the health threatening dangers of our environment such as stress, fatigue, worry, chemical additives in foods and poor air quality in our cities. The added strain on everyone's immune system today should warn us to find time to unwind and relax, only when the body is well balanced is a person in good shape to ward off illness

Reflexology is not a remedy to be pulled out of the medicine cabinet only when you are ill. It is also for the strong and vigorous, the busy and energetic, and those constantly on the go. Everybody needs relaxation and moments of reflection.

        The Stress Factor

Stress cannot be avoided, we live with it everyday. I however. stress only becomes a problem when it becomes too much for us especially when it results from problems, frustrations, overwork and worry. When we don't handle stress well the body's defenses breakdown and we become more susceptible to illness and disease. It has been estimated that 75% of  all illness is stress related.

Reflexology reduces stress by generating deep tranquil relaxation. This helps the systems of the body to function more efficiently and revitalises energy and well being on a physical mental and emotional level.

        The Reflexologist

The Reflexologist provides a channel for healing no instruments or gadgets are used, only the hands. It works by stimulating subtle energy flows, revitalising the body so that the natural internal healing mechanisms of the body can do their work, the results speak for themselves. People do attest to better health, Often with a marked reduction or even disappearance of the ailment, but it is not the Reflexologist that cures, the Reflexologist simply facilitates healing.

Although Reflexology is safe and drugless it is important to mention that some conditions should not treated by Reflexology without prior consultation with the patient's doctor. Infectious diseases, acute fevers, thrombosis and various cancers are typical. Ask your therapist if you think this may apply to you.

It is also important to consult a properly trained Reflexologist. There are various schools offering Reflexology training including the British School of Reflexology which is a member of the British Complementary Medicine Association.

        Children and Reflexology

Children or all ages respond particularly well to Reflexology and enjoy it. Most childhood syndromes can be treated, and case histories include bedwetting, irregular sleep and hyper-activity, bowel and digestive disorders, asthma, eczema and other allergies.

        What Reflexology is Not

There is a lot of misinformation and misunder-standing about Reflexology. It is not massage and is not medical treatment. Reflexologists do not diagnose illness nor do they practice medicine. Neither is Reflexology the panacea for all ills.
